The Exorcism

🔮 The House Remains – Can You Break the Curse? 🔮 At an hour when no one should be out, you step into a house swallowed by silence, where a curse clings to every wall. Armed with one name, three letters, a melody, three keys, and nine rooms to purify, you must race against time. Take the holy water and flee, but the house will never let you go. Run out of time, and it will take another soul. Cleanse everything in time… but escape is never guaranteed. Will you be fast enough, or will the house remember you forever? A Bit About My Game

The House Remains is a 3D first-person horror game built with atmosphere, mystery, and time-based tension at its core. It was developed by a small team—just me and two close friends. Due to the limited size of our team, I took on 90% of the game’s development, including design, programming, environment art, lighting, sound integration, UI/UX, and narrative elements.

This is my first fully developed game, created from the ground up, and it reflects my passion for immersive storytelling and psychological horror. From eerie soundscapes to haunting visuals, every element was crafted to create a tense, mysterious experience that challenges players to uncover secrets, solve puzzles, and survive the house’s curse—before time runs out.

Game Development Timeline – The House Remains

January 2025

Script & Concept Phase

  • Game idea conceptualized as a 3D first-person horror game.

  • Scriptwriting began early January, with major rewrites throughout the month.

  • Final script was locked in by end of January.

  • Initially planned in Unreal Engine, but due to limited resources and team size, we shifted to Unity for faster development and better compatibility.

February 2025

Core Development & Asset Integration

  • Started creating 3D models; due to time limits, some props were sourced from HDRI Haven (free, royalty-free).

  • Developed Main Menu, Pause Menu, and designed full UI layout.

  • Programmed core interactive mechanics using C# (e.g., object interaction, triggers, door logic).

  • Integrated sounds and ambient effects using royalty-free audio from Mixkit, since as a student I couldn’t afford licensed sounds.

  • Ensured all assets used were copyright-free, respecting student limitations.

March 2025

Full Game Build & Polish

  • Complete gameplay loop built, including exploration, puzzle solving, and decision-based ending system.

  • Developed and tested all three possible endings:

    • Bad Ending: Leave with the holy water.

    • Neutral Ending: Time runs out.

    • Good Ending: Cleanse all rooms and escape.

  • Visual tone inspired by manga-style horror art, with all assets created by me and Abhi Raj.

  • Game fully tested, optimized, and completed by March 25th.

  • Submitted the final build to the Spring Show at Academy of Art University.

Summary

The House Remains is a passion project created under tight time and resource constraints. Despite that, it delivers a compact and atmospheric horror experience with interactive storytelling, multi-ending gameplay, and a haunting world built from scratch by a tiny but dedicated team.

Due to submission requirements for the Spring Show at Academy of Art University, I’m currently unable to upload the full game here. However, you can explore the world of The House Remains through the images and gameplay video below.
